Today on Marine Science Minute with Florida Sea Grant: Sewage!

Let’s keep sewage out of our waterways, and not just because of the ‘yuck’ factor.

  • Raw or poorly treated sewage can spread diseases which can make you sick.
  • When sewage breaks down in the environment, it uses up oxygen in the water which makes it difficult for fish and other aquatic life to survive.
  • Also, excess nutrients from sewage can contribute to harmful algae blooms.

If you’re a boater, dispose of boat sewage using a pumpout. To find a public pumpout you can download the Pumpout Nav app on Google Play or in the app store.

For more information about this and other coastal topics, contact your county extension office or visit Florida Sea Grant at flseagrant.org.

*The Clean Boating program was funded through the Florida Department of Environmental Protection through a grant from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
