Today on Marine Science Minute with Florida Sea Grant: International Coastal Cleanup Day
September 21st marks the International Coastal Cleanup. This event removes trash that can be dangerous to birds, sea turtles, and other wildlife and provides data that can inform management decisions.
Volunteers all over the world will visit their local beaches to participate by picking up and categorizing trash on the beach. In Florida, the most common items found are cigarette butts, which contain a plastic filter that does not decompose. Other common items include plastic food wrappers, bottle caps, and plastic bottles.
To participate, check the Florida Sea Grant calendar for International Coastal Cleanup events near you. We hope to see you on the beach!
