Today on Marine Science Minute with Florida Sea Grant: Mangroves!

Mangroves are tropical trees that grow in coastal areas. They are adapted to life in salt water and benefit the environment in lots of ways.

Mangroves protect shorelines from erosion and storms. They are habitat for a variety of marine life, including fish, crabs, and shrimp. Mangroves trap carbon dioxide, and filter water to improve water quality. We need to protect these important trees so they can continue to provide benefits for the environment and for people.

You can help protect mangroves by:

  • Supporting organizations that are working to protect and restore mangroves.
  • Obeying laws that safeguard mangroves.
  • Following best practices for mangrove trimming and maintenance.
