Today on Marine Science Minute with Florida Sea Grant: Artificial Reefs. Did you know that Florida has one of the most active and diverse artificial reef programs in the US and the world? Artificial reefs are man made structures that are deployed at diverse depths to support marine life. There are almost 5000 artificial reefs patches around the state.  Florida Sea Grant provides important guidance and support to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s artificial reef program.   These artificial reefs are developed for a variety of purposes, including fishing and diving destinations, habitat restoration, and more recently, as memorial sites and underwater museums. They create and sustain businesses and jobs that have an economic impact in coastal communities.   For information about this and other coastal topics, contact your county extension office or visit Florida Sea Grant at flseagrant.org.
