Who doesn’t love a good fishing story? To keep those stories alive, it is up to everyone to learn and share best fishing practices with each other, ensuring the protection of Florida’s natural resources and fisheries.
With over 1/4 of Florida’s population being of Hispanic or Latino decent, and nearly 5 million people speaking Spanish at home, there is a clear need for more Spanish-translated information on angler education and natural resource stewardship. In response, Florida Sea Grant, UF/IFAS Extension, and The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), have developed the Florida Friendly Angler En Español Course!
Florida Friendly Angler En Español is a free, self-paced online program. The program offers fully-narrated lessons covering topics on best catch and release practices, environmental ethics, and fisheries management. The content includes educational videos and additional resources for those interested in diving deeper into program topics.
Not a Spanish speaker? No problem! An English version of the Florida Friendly Angler Program can be found here. Since it’s launch in 2022, thousands of anglers have already registered for the program and given it great reviews.
Here’s what a few course participants had to share regarding their reasons for enrolling in the course:
“Since I’m relatively inexperienced, I thought this would be a great way to learn the practical aspects of sustainable fishing so that I can fish sustainably and educate others whether I am fishing for work or for fun,” said Sarah.
“I want to be able to be a better fisherman to teach my three grandsons how to fish properly,” said Marvin.
“Being from Indiana, I wanted to make sure that I am educated on different species of fish that I might catch, both for their safety and mine. I found this course really helpful,” said Tyler.
Are you nibbling at the opportunity but not hooked yet? Upon successful completion of the course, participants can fill out a form to receive a Florida Friendly Angler decal and proudly display their dedication towards sustaining one of our state’s most valuable natural resources. Register for the Florida Friendly Angler or Florida Friendly Angler En Español today, sit back, relax, and learn a few fishy facts to share with your fishing friends next time you’re out on the water!
