Florida Sea Grant administers a number of fellowship, scholarship and award opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students at Florida universities. These are offered on an annual basis. Application deadlines are indicated below.

2014 NOAA Dean John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship
The John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship provides a unique educational experience to graduate students who have an interest in ocean or coastal resources and in the national policy decisions affecting those resources.
The program matches highly qualified graduate students with hosts in the legislative and executive branch of federal government in the Washington, D.C. area, for a one-year paid fellowship. The amount of this award, contingent on federal funding, is $56,500. The award is provided to each fellow for stipend, living expense and travel.

Full Federal Funding Opportunity
2013 Guy Harvey Scholarship
The 2013 Guy Harvey Scholarship supports undergraduate and graduate students enrolled full time at a Florida university who are conducting research related to the biology, ecology, habitat or management of fish in Florida's marine environment. Up to seven awards will be given in 2013 to highly qualified students. Awardees receive a framed certificate designed and signed by Guy Harvey and $5,000 to support their research program.

2013 NOAA Coastal Management Fellowship
This two-year fellowship is intended to provide on-the-job education and training opportunities in coastal resource management and policy for postgraduate students and to provide project assistance to state coastal zone management programs.
The program matches postgraduate students with state coastal zone programs to work on projects proposed by the state and selected by the fellowship sponsor, the NOAA Coastal Services Center. This opportunity offers a competitive salary, medical benefits, and travel and relocation expense reimbursement. Application packages should be sent to Jackie Whitehouse, Florida Sea Grant, PO Box 110400, 1762 McCarty Drive, Bldg 803, Gainesville, FL 32611-0400 and must include:
- Resume or curriculum vitae (2-page maximum).
- Statement of goals with emphasis on what you expect from and can contribute to the fellowship experience.
- Two letters of recommendation.
- Unofficial copies of all undergraduate and graduate transcripts.

2013 Aylesworth Scholarship
This scholarship is sponsored by the Aylesworth Foundation for the Advancement of Marine Science, and is available to students in all Florida universities that participate in the Florida Sea Grant College Program.
Students may be interested in any academic discipline having direct application in marine science ranging from basic biology and engineering, to economics and food science. The award is intended to be a career award and recipients will continue to receive the award each year as long as satisfactory progress is made toward degree completion.
Undergraduate awards typically are for two years, beginning in the junior year. Master’s level awards are for up to two years, and doctoral awards are for up to three years.
The maximum amount of award can be 65% of the official college or university annual cost, or $4,000, whichever is less.

NOAA National Marine Fisheries Fellowships
NOAA National Sea Grant and NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service offer graduate fellowships in two specialized areas: population dynamics and marine resource economics.
Ph.D. candidates interested in the population dynamics of living marine resources and the development and implementation of quantitative methods for assessing their status can receive up to three years of funding. View this pdf to learn more and apply.

Each fellow is required to work closely with a mentor from NOAA Fisheries who will serve on the fellow’s graduate advisory committee. The award for each fellowship, contingent upon the availability of federal funds, will be in the form of a grant or cooperative agreement of approximately $38,000 per year. The award is provided to each fellow for stipend, living expense, tuition, and travel necessary to carry out the proposed thesis research and to attend the annual Fellows meeting.

Florida Sea Grant Nutrient Dynamics Fellowship
The fellowship provides each of two University of Florida graduate students with $9,500 per year for two years to conduct research addressing some aspect of nutrient dynamics in coastal marine ecosystems. The research may focus on aquatic ecosystems, plankton, invertebrates, fish, nutrient cycling, food web dynamics, or any other aspect of the ecosystem -- as long as it addresses the response to nutrients.
Students who have been accepted into a University of Florida graduate program or who are already enrolled full-time in a University of Florida graduate program are eligible to apply.The next opportunity for funding will be in 2012.

Florida Sea Grant Scholars Program
Florida Sea Grant announces a new program that will provide financial support to exceptional graduate or undergraduate students who are enrolled full-time at Florida universities, in order to support timely and innovative ocean and coastal-related research. Two scholars will be awarded at the start of each summer and fall semester. The maximum amount of each award will be for $2,000. Awardees will work with our program to fill out standard Program Development proposal forms and route them through their university sponsored programs office in order to receive the funding, and they will need to report their results within 90 days of project completion in our online activity reporting system. This opportunity is now closed. Applications were due by Sept. 10, 2012.
Skoch Scholarship
This $1,000 scholarship is presented each year to a Florida high school senior who will major in a marine or coastal-related field of study at a Florida university. Awards are based on competition in the State Science and Engineering Fair. Funding for the scholarship is provided by the Skoch family as a memorial to Chuck Skoch, who died in an automobile accident in 1995.
The next opportunity for funding will be April 2013.

Research Assistantships
Florida Sea Grant allocates approximately 20% of its NOAA research budget to support students working on research projects funded through a competitive grants process. Faculty members at Florida universities, who are principal investigators of these research projects, apply for the funds to support graduate students as part of the research proposal process. Students do not apply directly for these awards.
Florida Outdoor Writers Scholarship
FOWA Scholarships are competitive and open to students at Florida colleges and universities, or to any student whose application is endorsed by a FOWA member or a faculty advisor. Scholarships range from $500 to $1,000. These scholarships are intended for college-aged students whose career goals are to communicate to the public a love and appreciation for hunting, fishing and other aspects of the outdoor experience.
The application period is now closed. Applications were due at Florida Sea Grant by May 13, 2013. Selections will be announced in early June.
